Two
major things to consider when thinking of rebinding a family bible:
·
the materials used in the rebinding
·
the condition of the bible.
Most
people would like to have their bible rebound in leather of which the three
most popular are:
·
Imitation – this is a heavy weight paper product
that is processed to look like leather.
It is available in many colors and withstands heavy usage.
·
Bonded -
this leather is like plywood – pieces of real leather are heat pressed together
to form a sheet that is used to bind the bible.
It is also available in various colors, but does not hold up under heavy
use.
·
Genuine – this is a single sheet of best grade
leather that is used to rebind the bible.
It is available in colors, and will withstand heavy usage.
Bibles may also be rebound in hardback buckram, a canvas
like fabric available in a large variety of colors and is almost
non-destructible. The price for buckram
is usually the same as for imitation leather.
In addition, it is possible to restore and rebind the family
bible using the original covers.
Rebinding a bible in leather costs:
·
Imitation - $270 - $390 black with an additional
charge for color.
·
Bonded leather - $280 - $300 with no charge for
a color
·
Genuine leather - $340 - #360 in black with a
additional $5.00 f - $7.00 for color
·
Restore using original covers - $295.00 to
$420.00
If
the bible is in good condition, there should be little or no extra expense for
the rebinding except for the shipping ($30.00 - $40.00) and sales tax.
Bibles
that have torn, lose, or detached pages will probably need to be re-sewn. Some pages can be repaired and laminated if
necessary. Additional family pages are
also available. Prices for these
services can range from $50.00 to
$100.00.
If
the bible is to be rebound, it is important that there are no missing pages. Once the bible has been rebound, it is almost
impossible to “tip in” the missing page.
If pages are missing, it may be advisable to store the bible in an
archival box.
The
prices listed above are a general guideline.
To receive a more accurate estimate, the bible can be sent to the
bindery for an examination. Once the estimate has been approved, the bindery
will proceed with the order.
